Yurok Trails and Waterways Master Plan

Del Norte and Humboldt Counties, California

Foothill Associates assisted with the development of a Trails and Waterways Master Plan for the Yurok Tribe. The Yurok Tribe Trails and Waterways Master Plan will serve as the planning tool to assess, develop, and provide an implementation strategy for land and water trails in the Yurok Ancestral Territory. Managed access to the unique geographical, cultural, and interpretive opportunities associated with the land and water trails will help stimulate eco-tourism, increase awareness of the Yurok Ancestral Territory, and provide sustainable, multi-use transportation options. The planning process included facilitating public participation in the Master Plan process, including a “Walk the Trail” event; completing an analysis of existing, historic, and proposed trails including waterways; developing a trail classification and grading system (adapted from existing systems, such as the National Trail Classification System (TCS)) to reflect Yurok uses and cultural values; identifying priority projects, and preparing an estimate of probable cost for construction including operations and maintenance (O&M) cost; and drafting a strategic and comprehensive plan for implementing and funding capital projects within the Yurok Tribe Trails and Waterways Master Plan.
