US 395 Widening

Reno, Nevada

Foothill Associates provided the Landscape and Aesthetics design for the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) US 395 widening project through Reno. This is the first Northern Nevada project constructed under the Landscape and Aesthetics Master Plan. The project extended from Plumb Lane to the Interstate 80 interchange and included a crossing of the Truckee River. Several locations along the corridor were selected for premiere levels of enhancement. Retaining walls, sloped infield ROW areas, bridges, and abutments were planned to feature regional cultural and landscape history themes. Sustainable landscape practices were used throughout the project such as salvage of topsoil, mulching of removed vegetation, and native and drought tolerant plants. The plant palette emphasized native and drought tolerant plants. Revegetation of the south bank of the Truckee River will be accomplished with willow stakes that were harvested on site. A variety of native plants will be installed on the north bank of the river around an existing multi-use trail. Foothill Associates coordinated a broad based stakeholder group that included key adjacent land owners, including the Reno Sparks Indian Colony. Input from tribal and stakeholder representatives influenced the final design so that it honors cultural, historic, and natural values. Foothill Associates provided renderings and photo simulations depicting views of the proposed improvements along with specialized cost estimating, specifications, and detailing.
