Secret Ravine Floodplain Feasibility Study

Placer County, California

Foothill Associates teamed with HDR, Inc. to conduct a feasibility analysis of the opportunities and constraints of alternative floodplain restoration scenarios in the Secret Ravine Watershed. The goals of the restoration project were to develop the best option for decreasing flood related damage while enhancing other functions of the watershed, including fish and wildlife habitat, water quality, and recreational opportunities. The hydrologic and hydraulic analyses were conducted by HDR, Inc. and Foothill Associates assessed the existing biological resources of the sites, developed alternative restoration scenarios, and analyzed the permitting issues likely to be encountered. Our results indicated that the strategy that provides the greatest overall benefit entails excavation and revegetation of one of the three sites for floodwater attenuation and control of erosion and habitat restoration at multiple sites. Foothill Associates also created conceptual planting plans using native vegetation and developed conceptual plans for enhancing public access and recreational opportunities in the watershed.
