Newtown Canal Rehabilitation

Nevada City, California

Foothill Associates prepared the Initial Study (IS) and Mitigated Negative Declaration (MND) pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act on behalf of the Nevada Irrigation District (NID) for proposed changes to a segment of the Newtown Canal raw water conveyance system. The study covers 1,900 feet of the 16-mile canal that is degraded and poses water quality issues. The initial study evaluated two proposed alternatives, both of which include the construction of a conveyance pipe within Newtown Road. Issues include aesthetics, air quality, biological resources, cultural resources, hazardous materials, geology and soils, and hydrology and water quality.  We wrote a Mitigation Monitoring Plan to identify mitigation measures included in the Initial Study and the responsibly entity for implementation of the mitigation measures. The IS/MND was approved by NID.
