Capay Site Restoration Visual Simulation

Capay, California

Foothill Associates provided rendering and visioning services as part of a restoration plan for the Capay mining operation of Granite Construction Company (Granite). Granite provided a conceptual plan for restoration of the aggregate mining site that included creation of a small lake surrounded by riparian and oak woodlands. Foothill Associates worked with Granite to refine the shape of the lake and the relationship of the trails to the lake and vegetation communities, also suggesting a potential future loop path around the lake and a kiosk/ interpretive center.

The facility is located in Capay, California and has some unique visual resources including rolling pastureland and impressive views of the Coast Range in the distance. In order to assess the potential visual impact of the proposed development, a 3-dimensional model was created using the existing topography, proposed topographic modifications, and generalized building masses representing the new facility. The model was used as the basis for line of sight analyses and viewshed analyses from select vantage points to identify portions of the project area that would be visible to the viewer from each viewpoint and demonstrate anticipated impacts. Perspective renderings depicted the south-shore trail along the restored lake, and a section displayed the relationship between the trails, lake and vegetation types.

Foothill Associates’ artists then designed a graphic presentation board and brochure that included a rendered plan and perspectives to communicate the restoration ideas to the public.
